Now that New York Fashion Week has come and gone for another year, what can you look forward to seeing on the racks this fall? Black is still a popular color for basic pieces, but there’s a lot of new trends you’ll find, as well. Here’s our highlights from Fashion Week.

Although black is still in and always chic, look for new neutrals from some designers, such as army green – it goes great with metallic accents. But because there’s still a lot of black set to hit the store shelves in fall, plan on buying classic pieces that will stay in style for a long time. More neutrals in white, gray and navy will also make an appearance, with lots of pieces combining black and dark blue.

Orange and blue will be big this year. Last year’s coral gets turned up a notch. Unlike their paler cousin, this year it’s all about orange and tangerine. Cognac and other rich browns are the perfect colors to pair with bright orange.

Denim in bright hues is still popular after first appearing on the runway last year. For a hip look, pair your skinny jeans with a candy-hued top in a contrasting color. Stay away from matching pieces and allow yourself to combine hues you wouldn’t normally consider “matching” (such as that orange and blue we mentioned). Of course, good old black always works well with bright-colored denim.

Leather and Fur

Leather is going to show up on all items of clothing – from traditional bomber jackets to skirts and leggings. Short leather jackets pair well with long pieces underneath, such as skinny jeans or a form-fitting skirt. But you’ll also find longer coats in leather and even little leather embellishments on things like tuxedo pants.

PETA is likely to protest but pieces of real fur showed up on cuffs, vests or coat lapels. These aren’t elegant coats, but peacoats and toggle coats that get just a hint of dressy decoration with touches of fur. Shearling will be big in the fall, too. Boots will show off a hint of fleece lining.

Styles and Themes

Cosmic and survival themes inspired by Hurricane Sandy dominated the runways. Starburst and Earth-like embellishments and rubberized clothing represent these two lines, respectively.

Evening Wear

While many of Fall 2013 styles were androgynous and almost shapeless, that didn’t hold true when it comes to evening gowns. Beaded, sheer, glamorous and feminine are the best words to describe the runway styles for evening wear. Cutouts placed strategically to show off a hint of curve will have those with a few extra pounds crying foul (definitely need some slenderizing shapewear underneath)!

Dark colors dominate once again, with black and navy popular for gowns. That classic color combo of black and white is still popular, as well.
